just desserts

and as an appropriate aside during this light and fluffy season of decadence and indulgence, a brief note about dessert...

i was never much of a dessert person growing up. it wasn't a staple at my family dinners, and i've never had much of a sweet tooth. given the choice, i'll always opt for the appetizer over the dessert. even today, i find that the greater purpose of ordering dessert at a restaurant is to make the meal linger as opposed to craving the sugar and calories.

what never fails to amuse me, however, on the 95% of occasions in which i bypass that final course is the inevitable "dessert chuckle" exchanged with the waitstaff. what is the dessert chuckle, you ask? relive this conversation in your head; i'm sure you've had it many times.

waiter: "can i interest you in dessert?"
my party: "not today, i think we're just too full"
waiter: *dessert chuckle* "oh okay, noo problem"
my party: *dessert chuckle as we pass the menus back*

yes, the dessert chuckle will crack even the crabbiest of waiters. but, just what is it that makes declining dessert so amusing?

umm, nothing really. *chuckle*

Some of us are offended by the dessert chuckle. Probably just pastry chefs though. As for the function of Dessert, your observation is, as always, an astute one. Its sole purpose, in origin, was to extend a meal which had reached its otherwise natural conclusion. I won't bore you with the history.
