magically delicious

i'm not one to typically recount an entire day in one of these entries, but the day i had yesterday was one of those that reaffirms all of my desires and reasons for choosing to live in manhattan.

it began at work, (well not exactly at work. it began with the second day of holiday cups at starbucks, which is a great start to any day). work is not too exciting, but unfortunately, many days must begin with work. luckily, i happen to enjoy my job, and i spent most of the day planning a party for the press department, in between watching tv and enjoying free lunch with my team.

after work, i met up with some friends, old and new, for drinks at the W-times square, aka one of the few places in times square where you can escape the bus loads of tourists below and pretend you're back downtown...in the W-union square perhaps.

after drinks, i rejoined the masses for the evening performance of the new broadway show, "in my life", a quirky love story by the composer of "you light up my life" about a young musician with tourretes whose life is manipulated by a flamboyantly fun angel from above who is on a mission to create an opera for God. sounds a little crazy, i know. and that's what i was hoping for! this show has been getting a lot of insider buzz. it has a cult following, simply because it is supposed to be that awesomely-bad. unfortunately, it was neither super awesome, or super bad. it was an enjoyable 2 hours of entertainment, without any overly memorable songs, or underwhelming performances. there was no indescribable genius of "avenue q", or incomparable score of "rent", but thanks to one of my perks at work, i can get first-price-level tickets for about half the price to most broadway shows (and you can too...if you ask nicely) and any live theatre experience is worth every penny.

after the show, i directed us out of times square to a little restaurant in hells kitchen i've been wanting to try for dinner. lo and behold, we are seated directly next to not one, but two power lesbians. the one and only melissa etheridge, and wife, tammy lynn michaels-etheridge...or so i thought. when "tammy lynn" got up to use the restroom, i realized that it was, in fact, kelli carpenter-o'donnell! and sure enough, moments later, rosie pulled up outside in her chauffered SUV after her performance in "fiddler" and came in to join the party.

this is not the first time i've seen rosie, but it is the first time i've seen her and kelli kiss hello (and the first time we were seated butt-to-butt while enjoying a meal). see my previous entries involving celebrity encounters for my typical thoughts, but i will admit that i have always been a huge rosie fan, and i admire her authenticity, despite her now infamous political rants. even while she ate, she discussed and planned ways to further her presence and her message on the web. (see www.rosie.com). while the others joked, she remained rather serious and deliberate. although her methods are different, like oprah, she seems to share the mentality that there is always work to be done, and those with celebrity have a responsibility to do the work only those with celebrity can, and i respect that (see my entry on celebrelief).

after dinner, we walked from 44th and 10th, to 24th and 3rd. there is nothing like virtually empty streets on a crisp autumn evening in manhattan. nothing.

You go eat dinner where the celebrities do. Your life is unreal.
