tales of the Never, Rare & Whenever

this morning was infuriating. i left the apartment a few minutes early (and by early, i mean getting out the door sometime between the last commercial break of regis & kelly, and the start of tony danza) and still managed to get to my desk late (and by late, i mean anytime after 10:29).

the typical door-to-desk commute can be accomplished in 20 minutes, including my coffee stop. so, how did i leave early, and arrive late? it's all thanks to my b.f.f., the NRW trains, otherwise known as the Never, Rare, and Whenever it feels like.

i arrived on the platform at approximately 10:05. there were just a few others already waiting, indicating that a train had probably come by 2 or 3 minutes earlier. that's fine; it's typical. during the rush hours, a train should come by every 5-6 minutes at least, especially when there are multiple lines running on the same track (the RW; the N only runs local on the weekends...hence the Never).

thus, you can imagine my surprise when i watched not one, but two N express trains stop across the way on the local downtown track. wtf?! these trains were promptly followed by a downtown R, an empty Q posing as an N (confusing, i know, but it happens), and an express Q, for a total of 5 trains running downtown in the period of time in which i waited for one fucking uptown train to arrive.

compare this to sitting in stopped traffic on 95 North, while the traffic on 95 South is flying by. this agonizing wait ended at 10:16, 11 minutes later, which you might think is hardly an inconvenience. but in new york, 11 minutes is an eternity, and i can't help but think of all the things i could have been doing instead.

i could have fully made my bed. i could have taken out the trash. i could have spent another 5 minutes in front of the mirror. i could have gone to starbucks on 23rd street and avoided the tourist line in times square. i could have slept in another 10 minutes!

i guess i could have also moved just a little bit faster and caught the 10:02 train. oh well...
