java & jd
this morning, upon entering my preferred starbucks in times square, i held the door open for none other than jonathan demme. to refresh, he is the oscar winning director of silence of the lambs, and good friend and colleague of peter saraf, aka the producer i interned for. (i am not even going to begin to explore the irony of this occurence that directly relates to my last two postings regarding my internship and holding the door open).
thus, i of course ended up standing behind him in line, and i was 99% positive it was him (though no spielberg, the face is very memorable...and the flowered hawaiian shirt is a dead giveaway, as jodie foster mentioned on regis & kelly last week when she reminisced over silence of the lambs). but i've never had an actual conversation with him before, despite my "insider" connection, as i was directly involved with the post-production of one his movies (the agronomist) and both organized and attended the benefit premiere in new york last april via my internship.
standing there, i found myself really wanting to say something. and i don't really know why, because i don't really know what i'd say, or how it'd sound, or how he would respond.
best case scenario:
me: "excuse me, mr. demme? hi.. i'm mark, how are you? i interned for peter saraf last year...and i worked on the agronomist"
jd: "oh? that's fantastic! why don't you come work for me!"
most likely scenario:
jd: "oh...that's great. nice to meet you."
(followed by awkward 5 minutes of standing behind him in line)
worst case scenario:
jd: "i think you have me confused with someone else."
needless to say, i didn't say anything. my whole "celebrity-space" professional mentality from work kind of kicked in, and i decided not to be invasive. i kind of regret it though, because who knows what would have happened?
when he ordered his drink though, (a grande non-fat cappuccino, for those who are interested), he was extremely jovial, and funny, and when the barista asked for his name, he responded with a big smile, "jd"
