title track
on the occasion of my 100th entry, i thought it might be an appropriate opportunity to take a closer look at the title of my blog. until now, i have left it unexamined, yet it's inherently linked to both the identity of this blog and my mission in general.
the more you see, the less you know.
at the inception of this forum, i derived the phrase from the lyrics of the U2 song, "city of blinding lights." besides obviously enjoying the song, i found that particular lyric to be provocatively paradoxical and profound [like the alliteration?].
there is a common notion that we, as a people, know more today than we did yesterday. and while it's true that we never stop learning, the wisdom that we gain from our experiences is not necessarily the same as knowledge. if anything, education should challenge us to question the things we have learned as fact, and often the education that we receive outside of the classroom is much more pertinent and influential than anything found in our libraries.
there is a famous question that gene siskel used to incorporate into his interviews prior to his death, and oprah has since popularized in her magazine, "what do you know for sure?" it seems like such a simple question, but the time it takes to generate a truthful answer is a little disconcerting. there are some things i do know for sure, but certainly not as many as i used to, and exploring that notion is the true motivation behind this blog.
