summer indulgence

i confess! i am completely and inexplicably infatuated with the food network and the travel channel, aka mtv for old people.

it began on oprah last season when rachael ray became one her regular guests. i'm not so much taking notes on recipes and whipping them up the next day, but i'm a huge fan of the "travel around the country and eat here" segments--after all, that's what i do! lo and behold, both the food network and travel channel dedicate entire programs to this very concept!

rachael ray's tasty travels, $40 a day, hot dog heavens, world's best places to pig out, donut crazy, pizza palaces, and the list goes on. this is where digital cable and dvr are particularly evil enablers. with the drought of original summer programming on the networks, i have even more time to devote to these culinary adventures, many of which i have already incorporated into my west coast vacation plans next week.

those gateway shows also helped to expand my tastes to a bit of the cooking fare, like 30 minute meals, and the surpisingly engaging, throwdown with bobby flay (well, i like his food, so why not). i even took in my first episode of iron chef the other night. yeah, i'm about 3 years behind on that one.

the moral of this story is to explore those barren regions of digital cable territory at your own risk...you may just find exactly what you're looking for (but could totally do without!).

Three years behind? Try Six. I took in my first episode of Iron Chef (drunk) our freshman year of college!
